About Live Corals
When people hear the term “corals,” they may think about colorful sea creatures affixed to a reef in tropical waters. This image isn’t incorrect.
Corals are colonial marine organisms composed of tiny polyps—individual animals with a stomach and mouth. Corals may be comprised of hundreds or thousands of polyps grouped together, all attached to the ocean floor. Some species are hard and grow without moving, while others are soft and have parts that will sway with the current.
Because corals are living organisms, they eventually die and leave behind skeletons of their former selves, collectively known as a reef. When reefs are created inside an aquarium, new live corals will attach themselves to it to start the growth cycle anew.

There are several types of corals available for purchase at our aquarium supply, each with its special appeal.
- Soft: This species doesn’t create reefs because their soft bodies have fleshy skeletons. Instead, they grow in unique shapes and have spiny textures and vibrant colors.
- LPS (Large Polyp Stony): As a hard coral, many LPS corals are quite hardy and can even be fast growing. These stony corals are generally easier to maintain in the aquarium than the small polyp stony (SPS) corals. For the most part they require less intense lighting and a lower water movement than SPS corals.
- SPS (Small Polyp Stony): As a hard coral, SPS Corals are the builders of calcium carbonate reef structures found in the wild. SPS corals thrive in turbulent water and stable temperatures.
